Russell named to Wallace Award Watch List

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 22, 2008) - ETSU senior  first baseman  Anthony Russell (Waldorf, Md.) was named to the 2008 preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced over the weekend. Dedicated to the memory of late Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, the award is in its fifth year and is given annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player.

 

Russell led the Bucs in almost all offensive categories last season hitting .335 with 19 doubles, 10 homeruns and 44 RBIs. The Maryland native was named Second-Team All-Conference last season, and was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team after helping the Bucs reach the championship game two years ago.

 

            The Watch List will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists in late May 2008. The selection committee, comprised of coaches, sports information and media relations contacts, former winners and media, will narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals. The winner will be announced at a banquet in Lubbock, Texas, following the College World Series; the banquet will be televised on Fox Sports Net and Fox College Sports.

 

Past winners are Kurt Suzuki (catcher, Cal State Fullerton, 2004), Alex Gordon (third baseman, Nebraska, 2005), Brad Lincoln (pitcher/designated hitter, Houston, 2006) and David Price (pitcher, Vanderbilt, 2007). For more information on the award you can visit www.collegebaseballfoundation.org.

 

The Bucs open the 2008 season Feb. 22-25 at Auburn for a four-game series at Plainsman Park.
