TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 3, 2009) - The 24th-ranked ETSU men's golf team fired the best team score of the tournament in the second round with a 6-under-par 278 and ultimately finished tied for fourth Tuesday following third and final round action in the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted at the Arizona National Golf Club.

In the Buccaneers first tournament of the spring season, junior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) led the way finishing tied for sixth at 2-under-par 211 for the event. Power finished 10 strokes back of individual champion Chris Paisley of Tennessee, who bested second place Matt Hoffenberg of San Diego State by three strokes. In the team competition, Pepperdine won by three strokes over San Diego State, while the Bucs tied with No. 20 UNLV for fourth.

"After the first nine holes of the tournament I think we were in last place, so if you would have told me then that we would finish tied for fourth I would have taken it," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren, whose squad posted their best team finish after three years of participating in the event. "We really started digging ourselves out after that start, and the second round in particular was great.

"It's a good start to our season on a very challenging and demanding course. I think this showed we have a lot of talent and potential on this team."

After posting a 4-over 75 in the first round, Power fired back-to-back rounds under par on Tuesday, carding a 5-under 66 in the second round and a 1-under 70 in the third. Along with Power, sophomore Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and freshman Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) each finished tied for 27th at 8-over 221, while sophomore Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) ended the event tied for 76th at 224.

The Bucs will return home and get a three week break before returning to play in the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, P.R., Feb. 27. For more on ETSU men's golf throughout the season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men's golf link.
