ETSU men's golf relinquishes lead, but still just three strokes out

Saturday, September 13, 2008

ROCKY FACE, Ga. (Sept. 13, 2008) - True freshman Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) posted a team-best 2-under-par 70 during Saturday's second round in the Carpet Capital Collegiate, keeping the ETSU men's golf team in second place and just three strokes off the lead heading into Sunday's third and final round at the Farm Golf Club.

The Buccaneers - who held the first round lead - are now three strokes back of in-state rival Chattanooga, and are one stroke better than ACC foe Clemson. Individually, Clemson's Kyle Stanley has fired a two-day total of 5-under 139 to sit two strokes better than a quartet of players.

In addition to Stewart's efforts, ETSU also got quality performances from sophomore Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) and junior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) both of whom finished the day with even-par 72s. O'Kane is currently tied for eighth at 1-under and just four strokes back of the individual lead, while Stewart is tied for 12th and Power is tied for 31st.

"We actually played fairly well again today and we feel fortunate to be in position to challenge for the lead tomorrow," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "The guys have done some good things this weekend and that's encouraging because the course is playing very difficult, which is obvious because par is a great score.

"We have a young team, but they've played very well. Paul and Michael have been especially consistent so far."

Other ETSU scores of note included a 4-over 76 from sophomore Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England), while senior Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland) was unable to repeat his impressive score of 2-under 70 from Friday and struggled to an 84 on Saturday.
