Coy picks up double-double, five Bucs reach double figures offensively

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 8, 2008) - Freshman post Seth Coy (Montgomery, Ind.) posted a double-double in his first collegiate action and five ETSU players reached double figures scoring as the Buccaneers to a 100-73 win over Mars Hill in their final exhibition game of the preseason Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Center.

The 6-foot-11 Coy posted 11 points and 12 rebounds in just 15 minutes of action, while senior guard Courtney Pigram (Memphis) netted a game-high 25 points, senior forward Kevin Tiggs (Flint, Mich.) added 14, freshman guard Jarvis Jones (Memphis) pitched in 13, and sophomore guard Micah Williams (Manchester) contributed 10. The Bucs shot 48 percent from the floor, outrebounded the Lions 56-34, forced 23 Mars Hill turnovers, and grabbed 16 steals in the game.

"I thought we did a lot of things better tonight," said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow, referring to the improvements in his team's play since last weekend's 84-61 win over Milligan College. "It was a high possession game, so even though they scored 73 I thought we defended well and showed a lot of effort. We shot it well, rebounded well, and having five players in double figures was encouraging."

In the first half, the Lions certainly gave the Bucs a scare. In fact, with just over 10 minutes left before the break, a basket by Mars Hill's Tony Blake made it 23-16 in favor of the visitors. However, from there ETSU put on the fullcourt pressure, along with a dose of quality 3-point shooting and transition offense. The result was a 10-minute stretch that saw the Bucs outscore Mars Hill 37-15 to take a 53-38 advantage at the break.

The first 20 minutes gave ETSU fans a glimpse of what's to come this year, as Pigram led the way with 13 points and Tiggs added 12. But the surprise of the first half was Coy, who scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds in just five minutes of floor time.

"The biggest thing about Seth is he's not going to wow you, but he can back you down and take up a lot of space," Bartow said. "What's unusual about him is he can really move and I think he showed that tonight."

In the second half, the Bucs did not let the Lions back in the contest, going on a 12-0 offensive spurt to make it 65-38 and set the game on cruise control the rest of the way.

Along with the five players in double figures, the Bucs got a game-high seven assists to only one turnover for freshman point guard Adam Sollazzo (Tampa), while sophomore post Tommy Hubbard (Boston) pitched in nine points, seven rebounds and a team high four steals.

For Mars Hill, Danny Sanders led the way with 16 points, while P.J. Gore scored 11 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds.

The Bucs will return to action Friday in the first round of the Charleston Classic against Atlantic 10 foe Temple. Game time is set for 3 p.m. that afternoon and the game will air live on CSS in the Tri-Cities and Southwest Virginia.
