Tulsa, Okla. (October 10, 2008) - ETSU men's tennis senior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) continued his red-hot play at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Friday, defeating Florida State's Clint Bowles, 7-6 (5), 2-5, 6-3.
With the win Olivares advances to Saturday's quarterfinals, where the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference "Player of the Year," will face off against Virginia's Michael Shabaz.
"It was great to see Enrique advance again today," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "Bowles did a good job in the second set coming back, but Enrique is so focused right now that he was able to stay mentally tough and win the match."
With the win, Olivares will now try to win both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches Saturday. Also with the victory the No. 31st ranked player also earns an automatic berth in the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships, which will take place later this fall.
"What an outstanding accomplishment for Enrique to qualify for the ITA Indoors," said Zaatini. "ETSU hasn't had too many players that achieved the honor of competing in this great event. It's been since 1992 that a Buccaneer produced an achievement like this."
