Stupak picks up 19 straight singles victory in 4-3 win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 22, 2009) - After winning three straight Atlantic Sun Conference matches the ETSU women's tennis team stepped out of league play by ending Charlotte's seven match home winning streak with a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the Philips Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C. With the win ETSU improves to 7-4 overall, while 49ers fall to 9-4.

After Charlotte picked up the doubles point to start the contest, junior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) picked up her 19 consecutive singles win. The No. 109th-ranked singles player in the nation dropped Ana Spivakovsky in an exciting 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) match in No. 1 singles action knotting the contest a 1-1.

After senior Tara Byrne (Johnson City) fell in her match freshman Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) tied the match at 2-2, defeating Koren Fleming in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.), then extend the ETSU advantage after winning her sixth straight singles contest this spring dropping Gabi Vergara, 6-3, 6-1.

Just when it looked like ETSU would sail to an easy two-point win the 49ers rallied as Kimber Redfen gave sophomore Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) her first loss of the spring 6-1, 6-0.

With the match now tied 3-3 and only one singles contest left to finish ETSU's fate would fall on freshman Paula Jamie (Madrid, Spain).  After dropping the first set 5-3 the Lady Buc newcomer would dig deep taking the final two sets 6-3, 6-3 allowing ETSU to escape with the 4-3 win.

"This was definitely a tough match today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "Charlotte has a great program and is a really tough team to defeat on their home court so I was proud to see how our girls played hard and was able to come away with the win in a pressure packed situation. This type of contest is going to benefit our team down the road as we head deeper into the season."

The Lady Bucs will now return to action with their third home match of the season against Winthrop this Tuesday at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center on the ETSU campus.
