ETSU men's soccer set to host Appalachian State in inaugural season opener

Thursday, August 28, 2008

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 28, 2008) - The ETSU men's soccer team is set to host Appalachian State in its inaugural season opener this Friday at 5 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

The Bucs come into the match having split their preseason exhibitions with a win over King College at home, 2-0, and a loss at UNC Asheville, 3-1. ETSU features a young squad with 21 freshmen on the roster. Although the team is inexperienced, head coach Scott Calabrese has brought in a lot of talent in his first year at the helm.

Appalachian State won both of its exhibition matches coming into the contest, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne, 2-0, and Emory & Henry, 8-0. The Mountaineers finished the 2007 season with a record of 6-12-3. Top returners for ASU include Juan Obregon, who was tied for second in points on the team, and J.T. LaBruyere.

Fans who have purchased season or individual game tickets will receive a commemorative ticket along with a ticket holder provided by Citizen's Bank and Wyndham Vacation Resorts. Aramark will also be giving out soccer stress balls throughout the game. Students who are members of Buc Wild will be able to enjoy free food at the Buc Wild tent during the game. For questions about joining Buc Wild call 439-5286.

It will also be "Club Night", as admission is free for all club soccer teams throughout the region. Teams with players in the 9th grade and up will need to fax a team roster to Sara Hacker of the marketing and promotions department. Questions can be answered by the marketing and promotions department at 439-5283.

Some of the special events include a "special delivery" of the game ball by the ETSU Army ROTC, while the ROTC will also have a vehicle display for fans to enjoy. In addition, ETSU President Dr. Paul E. Stanton Jr., ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dave Mullins and men's soccer head coach Scott Calabrese will make a special pregame presentation as the official game ball will be presented to Mullins, and a special autographed game jersey will be presented to Dr. Stanton.

As always the men's soccer team will be available for autographs following the game on the south end of the stadium.
