ETSU baseball cruises to defeat Ospreys 12-8

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 5, 2009) - Three home runs by ETSU hitters was all the Bucs needed to cruise to a 12-8 win over North Florida Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Bucs improved to 14-14 on the year and 6-9 in conference play, while the Ospreys fall to 14-18 overall and 8-7 in the league.
Senior Dustin Plumlee (Powell, Tenn.) picked up his third win of the season as he went 6.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with one walk and three strikeouts to improve to 3-4 on the season.
UNF starter John Atteo was tabbed with his third loss of the season as he went only 2.0 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits.
The Bucs jumped out in front in the top of the first as first baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) send a three-run home run over the fence in left center for his fourth of the season to give ETSU a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning designated hitter Derek Trent (
UNF got on the board in the bottom of the second as Kyle Martin singled in a run to make the score 4-1 Bucs.
Hoilman added two more in the top of the third as he crushed a two-run home run over the fence in left center to extend the lead to 6-1. The Bucs added three more runs in the inning on RBI singles by shortstop Chas Byrne (
The Ospreys scored three more in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Justin Preckajlo and a T.J. Thompson grounder to first to cut the Buccaneer lead to 9-4.
Petro got into the act in the top of the fourth as he hit his sixth home run of the season over the fence to straight away center for a two-run home run to extend the ETSU lead to 11-4.
Preckajlo drove a ball over the fence in left for his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 11-5 ETSU.
The Bucs got a run back in the top of the eighth as left fielder Troy Mendez (
Thompson added a run in the bottom of the ninth for the Ospreys as he doubled in a run to make the final 12-8.
Darren Caldwell (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up his second save of the season going 3.0 innings allowing only one run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The Bucs were led offensively by Hoilman as he was 3-for-5 on the day with two home runs, five RBI and scored three runs. Petro also had a good day as he was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, scored two runs and drove in two.
