JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2008) - The Gold squad took game one of the Blue/Gold World Series Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Park, 3-2.

Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) threw six scoreless innings for the Gold team as he was able to work himself out of a first inning, bases loaded jam. Burton's seven strikeouts in the win earned him the Player of the Game honor. Freshman Josh Gonzaga (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) also had a good outing for the Blue squad as he only allowed three runs in 5.1 innings and had five strikeouts.

The Gold took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Nick Belcher (Abingdon, Va.) doubled down the right field line driving in Jacob Fabry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) from third.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fabry increased the Gold team's lead as he tripled to right center driving in Trey Dunnigan (Boone, N.C.) to make the score 2-0. In the next at bat, Ben Allen (Kingsport, Tenn.) perfectly placed a bunt down the first base line to easily score Fabry from third on the safety squeeze to give the Gold a 3-0 lead.

The Blue team made things interesting in the top of the seventh as Cody Bentley (Pound, Va.) doubled down the right field line to score Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) to cut the lead to 3-1. Later in the inning, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in Troy Mendez (Roswell, Ga.) with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the Gold advantage to 3-2, but it wouldn't be enough as Allen made a great scoop and throw with two outs to end the game.

Fabry led the Gold team with two hits and two runs, while Hoilman and Mendez each had two hits for the Blue squad.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday at 2:45 p.m. at Cardinal Park. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU baseball or any other Buccaneer athletic team.
