DELAND, Fla. (May 8, 2009) - Stetson starter Andy Mauldin proved to be too much for the ETSU baseball team as the Bucs dropped game one of the three-game series to the Hatters Friday night at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla., 6-1.

With the loss, the Bucs drop to 23-23 on the season and 9-16 in conference, while Stetson improves to 24-26, and 13-12 in league play.

Starter Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) was tabbed with the loss going 7.0 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on ten hits with a walk and a strikeout. Mauldin picked up the complete game win for Stetson allowing only one run on four hits with a career high 11 strikeouts.

The Bucs were led offensively by centerfielder Jacob Fabry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) as he was 2-for-3 on the night with a walk and a run scored.

Mark Jones put the Hatters in front 1-0 in the bottom of the second on a RBI single to left.

The Bucs answered in the top of the third as third baseman Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) singled in Fabry to tie the game at 1-all.

Stetson retook the lead in the bottom of the third as third baseman Sean Emory came in to score on a RBI ground out by centerfielder Casey Frawley. Later in the inning, right fielder Jeremy Cruz singled in another run to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hatters added another run on a RBI single by catcher Nick Rickles to make the score 4-1.

The Hatters added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Emory to extend the Stetson lead to 6-1.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. as they take on Stetson in game two of a three-game series. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU baseball and all other Buccaneer athletic news.
