Bucs drop doubleheader to first place Eagles

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 1, 2009) - The ETSU baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end Friday as the Bucs dropped both games of a doubleheader to Florida Gulf Coast, 18-7 and 19-4.

 

The Bucs fall to 23-21 on the season and 9-14 in conference play, while FGCU improves to 28-16 overall and 18-5 in league play.

 

Pete Woodworth earned the win in game one going 6.2 innings allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) was tabbed with the loss after surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 3.0 innings of work to fall to 1-1 on the year.

 

Chris Sale picked up the win in game two allowing one run on three hits going 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts as Sale had a perfect game through four innings. Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) was the losing pitcher of record going 3.1 innings giving up nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

 

The Buccaneers were led offensively by first baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and third baseman Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) as Hoilman was 3-for-5 on the day with two home runs, four RBI and two walks, while Reeder also had three hits and hit his 14th home run of the season to put him only one back of the ETSU freshman home run record.

 

Right fielder Troy Mendez (Roswell, Ga.) extended his current hitting streak to 19 games with a single in the ninth in game two.

 

In game one, FGCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Brad Roberts RBI single up the middle. The Eagles added two more runs in the innings on a RBI singles by centerfielder Josh Upchurch and second baseman Mikel Alvarez to make the score 3-0.

 

Roberts singled in another run in the top of the third to increase the Florida Gulf Coast lead to 4-0.

 

The Eagles jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the top of the fourth scoring seven runs on seven hits including a solo shot to right by Upchurch.

 

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Hoilman drove his ninth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left for a three-run home run to cut the FGCU lead to 11-3. Later in the inning, the Bucs added another run as catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) came in to score on a ground ball hit to second by right fielder Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) to bring the score to 11-4.

 

Florida Gulf Coast added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a RBI double by right fielder Josh Chester and a two-run home run to left center by catcher Robert Greene to make the score 14-4.

 

ETSU got a big three-run double by second baseman Ben Allen (Kingsport, Tenn.) in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the gap to 14-7.

 

The Eagles answered with four runs in the top of the eighth on a RBI single by Alvarez and a three-run double by Chester to give FGCU a 18-7 lead.

 

In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles by Chester and shortstop Steven Wickens.

 

FGCU scored seven runs on six hits and an ETSU error in the top of the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

 

In the top of the fifth, Florida Gulf Coast added three more run on solo home run by Maxfield and a two-run shot by Wickens to make the score 12-0.

 

Maxfield homered for the second time in the game in the top of the sixth to extend the FGCU lead to 13-0.

 

The Eagles scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh highlighted by two-run home runs by Chester and Roberson to put FGCU in front 19-0.

 

Hoilman hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Eagle lead to 19-1.

 

The Bucs added another run in the bottom of the eighth as Trent came in to score on a balk to make the score 19-2.

 

Reeder added two more runs for ETSU in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run home run to right to make the final 19-4.
