JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2009) - After suffering a stunning 9-5 setback to Tusculum in the opening game of its fall tournament on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Buccaneer softball team bounced back nicely by blanking Milligan 3-0 at the ETSU Softball Complex.

With the split, ETSU is now 3-1 in its fall season after sweeping King and Mars Hill last weekend.

ETSU vs. Milligan Recap

The Lady Bucs scored one run in the first and two more in the third to cap off the tournament split over Milligan on a damp Saturday evening inside the ETSU Softball Complex.

Senior Trisha Massenzo (Russellville, Tenn.) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first by capitalizing on Milligan pitching miscues. Massenzo recorded her third extra base hit of the fall by posting a two-out double and later scored on a wild pitch - putting the Lady Bucs ahead, 1-0.

With fellow senior right-hander Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) dealing in the circle, the Lady Buccaneer run was enough offense needed for the win. However, ETSU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-0 contest. Senior Katy Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) and freshman Lucy Schneider (Dade City, Fla.) extended their hitting streaks with back-to-back one-out singles, and came around to score on two fielding errors by Milligan.

Hardy, who faced the minimum through 3.1 innings, allowed only one hit in six innings of work. The Rocklin, Calif. native had to overcome some control issues after issuing five walks, but Hardy did an excellent job working out of a jam in the fifth. With one out and two on, Hardy induced two Milligan hitters into ground outs - keeping the Lady Buffs' runners stranded at first and third.

After Hardy retired the side in the sixth, sophomore righty Shelby Morris (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) worked a perfect seventh to earn the save. Hardy, who was making her first start of the fall season, picked up the win after striking out eight Milligan hitters.

ETSU vs. Tusculum Recap
The Lady Bucs jumped out to an early 4-3 lead through the first three innings against Tusculum, but the Pioneers plated five runs in the fourth to upset ETSU, 9-5.

ETSU grabbed the early lead when Trisha Massenzo's RBI single brought home Lucy Schneider from second, which put the Lady Bucs up, 1-0.

Tusculum quickly scored two runs in the top of the second, but the Pioneer lead didn't last long, as Katie Henderson's (Jackson, Tenn.) solo home run with one out in the bottom half of the frame evened the ballgame at 2-all.

The back-and-forth contest remained when Tusculum plated a lone run in the third, but again, ETSU regained the advantage as Schneider and Katy Jett both came in to touch the dish - making it a 4-3 contest.

Unfortunately, the Pioneers capitalized on two costly Lady Buccaneer errors in the fourth, and regained momentum by scoring five runs (four unearned) to come away with an 8-5 lead.

Junior newcomer Jessica Duncan (Ooltewah, Tenn.) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four unearned) on five hits in one-plus inning of work.

The Lady Bucs conclude fall tournament play on Saturday, Oct. 17 when ETSU hosts Virginia Intermont (10 a.m.), Roane State (4 p.m.) and Lincoln Memorial (6 p.m.).
