Knoxville, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2009) - Led by senior Yevgenyia Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine), the ETSU women's tennis team had an up-and-down first day Friday at the 2009 St. Mary's Tennessee Classic at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Knoxville.

Stupak one of two ETSU victories on the day  rolled past No. 44 ranked Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

"Yevgenyia looked outstanding this afternoon," said head coach Steve Brooks. "Kulikova is a great player from Wake. Throughout the match she tried to keep Jen off balance by changing her pace and style four or five times in the second set. That being said, Stupak stayed tough and pulled through."

In addition to Stupak, junior Andra Voniea (Brasov, Romania), also picked up a win, as the Lady Buc upperclassman gained her old form with a strong 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Demon Deacons' Katarina Reveche.

"Andra looked like her old self today," Brooks said. "Last season she had some trouble getting over her broken wrist, but today she looked like the all-conference performer she was her freshman year."

Also in action for the Lady Bucs was sophomores Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain), Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), and junior Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa).

Unfortunately, for ETSU no other player was able to close out a number of close matches Friday.

"Yevgenyia and Kelly were up early in their doubles match, but disappointingly Tennessee was able to climb back in the contest and get hot at the right time," said Brooks. "That being said, this tournament has a number of great teams and players so it's good for our girls to get use to playing under that type of pressure. This experience forces our players to gain that desire to want to win when the pressure in on."
