Jamie leads Lady Bucs after day one of tough Kentucky Fall Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky.  (Oct. 9, 2009) - Led by sophomore Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) the ETSU women's tennis team picked up two singles wins during first day action of the Kentucky Fall Invitational Friday, at the Henry J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.

           

            Jaime - a 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Second-Team member - earned the Lady Bucs first victory of the day over Virginia's Neela Vaez 6-1, 6-2.

 

            Fellow Lady Buc, freshman Diana Navrotska (Kviv, Ukraine), joined the winning ways as the ETSU newcomer made quick work of Penn State's Sarah Henderson in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

 

            "Today we had a lot of close matches, but overall I was glad to see Diana and Paula pick up some key singles wins," said head coach Steve Brooks.

           

            Also in action for ETSU was freshman Miranda Cameron (Lenoir City, Tenn.), sophomore Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania). Unfortunately, no other Lady Buc player could manage any singles victories.

 

            In doubles action the ETSU duo of Kedzo and Jaime fell to the Ohio State team of Manashirova and Steele, 8-4, while the Lady Buo squad of Cameron and Voinea could not overcome the big serve of Maryland's duo Fournier and Wig, falling 8-2.

 

            "Despite the lack of wins, today was a important for our girls with the experience they gained playing indoors," said Brooks. "Since we had rain early this morning all the events were moved inside, which gave us the opportunity to play a style of tennis that we don't get to see a lot at home. This should help prepare our players for the upcoming regionals, which tend to play at a quicker pace."
