JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2009) - After three straight road matches the ETSU women's soccer team returned home with bang, as the Buccaneers routed Atlantic Sun Conference rival USC Upstate 5-0 Monday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

With the win ETSU improved to 4-10-0 overall, with a even 3-3 (9 points) mark in A-Sun play, while USC Upstate dropped to 0-15-0, with a 0-6 conference record.

ETSU opened the scoring quickly as freshman forward Tori Head (Kingsport, Tenn.), tapped home the first goal of the match, after senior defender Kim Jones' (Springfield, Va.), shot bounced off of Upstate keeper Brittany Daughtry in the sixth minute.

The Bucs added to their tally 13 minutes later as junior midfielder Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.), netted her second goal of the season, with a strong 25 yard blast through the Spartan defense.

"The biggest difference today was our ability to finish our scoring opportunities," said head coach Heather Henson. "Our offense attacked as a unit from start to finish. That was one of the keys today with us being victorious."

After taking its two goal lead into the intermission, senior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas), opened the second half with her first points of the day, converting a pass, from Brinkman in the box, for her third goal of the season in the 53rd minute.

Fellow forward, junior Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.), also netted her third goal of the season after the Cape Coral, Fla., native founded the back of the net off of a beautiful pass from Monty in the 78th minute.

Just when it looked like Monty was done on the day, the Buc captain crossed a pass from the right side of the offensive zone, where sophomore midfielder Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio), headed home her first score of 2009 for the final 5-0 tally.

"Our players did a great job keeping their poise after we scored early," Henson said. "Every one of our girls attacked and defended in numbers all over the field. Hopefully we can now take this energy and use it this weekend against two qualify opponents."

Offensively, Monty led the Bucs with five points on the day (1 goal, 2 assists), while sophomore keeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.), posted her third shutout of the season with five saves, including a first half stop on Daphnee Caset's penalty kick.

With the win ETSU improved its all-time record against USC Upstate to 3-0-0. Also with the five goal advantage the Bucs posted their largest margin of victory since ETSU defeated South Carolina State 6-1 Oct. 19, 2005.

The Bucs return to action with its second straight home match, a 1:30 p.m., kickoff Friday against Mercer at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
