Women's soccer takes a break with Upward Bound program
Friday, August 21, 2009
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 21, 2009) - After preparing for its season opener against Tennessee Thursday, the ETSU women's soccer team took time out of its busy schedule to help evaluate a local Upward Bound soccer program at Tri-Cities Baptist Church in Gray, Tenn.
"We really enjoyed the time we spent with the youth players," said head coach Heather Henson. "It was refreshing for our college team and coaching staff to be around these kids."
The Bucs helped the local youth league evaluate each player, where teams would have an evenly placed roster. The unique aspects of the Upward program include this evaluation system that promotes equal and competitive teams as well as a substitution system which allows for equal playing time for all participants involved.
"All the kids were so excited about being there," said Henson. "You could see the love of the game each of these youth players had for soccer and what a joy it brought to them as their season got underway."
During their busy season, the Bucs volunteer and host soccer camps for other community originations like Fit to Play and Girls Inc just to name a few.
