Bucs fall in extras to Radford, 9-8

RADFORD, Va. (April 27, 2010) - Radford got a walk-off single by Cory Turner in the tenth as the ETSU baseball team fell in extra innings to the Highlanders 9-8 Tuesday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park in Radford, Va.

 

Buccaneer reliever Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) was tabbed with the loss for the Bucs (22-18, 11-7 A-Sun) after giving up a run on one hit in two innings of work.

 

Jason Patten earned the win for the Highlanders (21-19, 8-7 Big South) after 2.0 innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the year.

 

ETSU was led offensively by First baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and third baseman Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.). Hoilman was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Reeder had two hits including a home runs and drove in two.

 

Hoilman gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he singled in Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) from third.

 

Radford answered in the bottom half scoring two runs on a Matt Hillsinger RBI single and a Raphael Turner RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.

 

The Buccaneers roared back in the second to take a 6-2 lead scoring five runs on three hits highlighted by a two-run home run by Reeder. The home run was Reeder's 12th of the season.

 

Brett Mollenhauer cut into the ETSU lead in the bottom of the second driving in a run on a sac fly to center to make the score 6-3.

 

In the third, after a leadoff single and stolen base by left fielder Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.), freshman Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) singled up the middle scoring Byrne to extend the ETSU lead to 7-3.

 

RU cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth as Alex Guerra came around to score on a Carl Travers single.

 

The ETSU lead was cut to 7-5 in the fifth as Hillsinger singled in Reggie Keen.

 

The Highlanders added a run in the sixth as Rick Hoogstraten scored on a ball hit to second by Mollenhauer to bring the score to 7-6.

 

Radford regained the lead in eighth as the Highlanders score two runs on a RBI single by Travers and a Buccaneer wild pitch to go ahead 8-7.

 

Freshman Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tied the game at 8-all in the top of the ninth as he singled to right scoring Hoilman from second.

 

In the bottom of the tenth, Cory Turner drove a pinch hit single into left scoring Guerra to make the final 9-8 Highlanders.
