JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 11, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team pounded out nine home runs Tuesday as the Bucs swept UNC Asheville in a doubleheader at Cardinal Park 13-7 and 11-0.

 

Junior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) was impressive for the Bucs (29-21, 14-10 A-Sun) going 5-for-8 with a triple, four home runs and seven RBI. Hoilman broke both the single season RBI and home run record on the night as he now has 75 RBI and 23 home runs on the year.

 

Centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) also had a good offensive day for ETSU as Scruggs was 6-for-7 with a home run, score for runs and drove in three, while Trent had five hits including two home runs.

 

Starter Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) picked up the win in game one to improve to 7-4 on the year after limiting the Bulldogs to two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.

 

In game two, Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) combined to throw a four hit shutout. The shutout is the first for ETSU in 191 games dating back to 2007. Byrne stuck out six in the contest, while Doane threw two perfect innings in relief.

 

Game One Recap:

 

Danny Baatz gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first as he sent a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left.

 

In the bottom half of the inning, Hoilman crushed a solo shot over the fence in left for his 20th home run of the season to cut the UNCA lead to 2-1.

 

The Bucs tied the game at 2-all in the second as Byrne came in to score on a Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) steal attempt.

 

Hoilman put ETSU in front 4-2 in the third as he sent a towering two-run homer over the left field fence. The home run tied the single season school record of 21 set by Mike Nipper and Anthony Russell.

 

ETSU exploded for five runs in the fifth to go ahead 9-2 on three home runs including a two-run shot by Hoilman which broke the school record.

 

In the sixth, Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) drew a bases loaded walk to put the Bucs in front 10-2. Later in the inning, right fielder Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) came in to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Doane to make the score 11-2 Bucs.

 

UNC Asheville added a run in the seventh as Cody Buch came in on an ETSU throwing error to cut the Buccaneer lead to 11-3.

 

Derrick Hopkins cut the ETSU lead to 11-7 in the eighth as he drove a grand slam over the right field fence.

 

Reeder added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as he sent his 17th home run over the fence in right center. Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) capped off the scoring as he singled in Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) from second to make the final 13-7.

 

Game Two Recap:

 

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the third as Skyler Barnett (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Scruggs came around to score on an errant throw by Harrington. Later in the inning, Hoilman drove in Green from third as he tripled to right center to make the score 3-0.

 

In the fourth, ETSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three Buccaneer home runs including a three-run shot by Scruggs.

 

After a Michael Gonzalez triple in the fifth, Niesman doubled to left scoring Gonzalez. In the next at bat, Barnett singled up the middle scoring Niesman to make the score 10-0 ETSU.

 

Senior Drew Story (Jefferson City, Tenn.) led off the sixth with a double, and then came around to score on a Reeder single to make the final 11-0.
