Enoch splits matches on first day at Palmer Cup

Thursday, June 24, 2010

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (June 24, 2010) - ETSU rising senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) went 1-1 in his two matches on Thursday during the first day of action in the Palmer Cup at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

In the morning four-ball match, Enoch and teammate Andrea Pavan defeated John Chin and Daniel Miernicki, 3 and 2. However, in the afternoon foursome matches, Enoch and Pavan fell to Chin and Miernicki in a tight battle, 1-up. After leading for most of that match, the Americans watched as Enoch and Pavan tied it up on the 16th. Both teams then parred the 17th, but Chin and Miernicki played the 18th well and ultimately won out.

The Americans went on to actually sweep all the foursome matches and now lead 6-2 heading into Friday's single pairings. The event will wrap up with more singles action on Saturday.

Stretching back to 1997, the Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup style competition that pits the best collegiate players from Europe against the best from the United States. The series is tied 6-6-1, with Europe having won the last two contests. Enoch is the 10th ETSU player to participate in the event.
