WILLIMSBURG, Va. (March 17, 2010) - For only the second time in the last six weeks the ETSU women's tennis team found itself on the losing end of things as the Lady Bucs fell 5-2 Wednesday to No. 71 William and Mary at the Busch Tennis Courts in Williamsburg, Va.

With the loss ETSU fell to 8-3, while the Tribe improved to 6-8 on the season. Wednesday's defeat was the first defeat for the Lady Bucs - who were riding a eight match winning streak - since February 6 at No. 54 Virginia Tech.

"We didn't have the best energy today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "That being said we can use this match as a point of reference to get better as we move into the rest of conference play. William and Mary is an excellent team that should be ranked even higher than they are now. So even though we didn't play our best this afternoon hopefully this is a match we can look back on and say we learned some things and improved."

As play opened the Tribe looked impressive as they swept all three doubles matches for the quick 1-0 lead.

ETSU countered the score as senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) put Lady Bucs on the board with a strong 6-4, 6-2 win over senior Ragini Acharya.

"Yevgeniya played really well today," said Brooks. "Acharya is a senior on their team and has actually been a really good player nationally throughout her career. She's a girl that has participated in the NCAA Singles Championship and the ITA All-American so I'm real proud of how Yevgeniya competed against her."

The only other victory on the day for the Lady Bucs came as Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romaina) did battle with Katie Kargl at the No. 5 position. After Voinea dropped the first set 4-6, the ETSU junior responded with a strong 7-5, 10-2 comeback win.

"Andra really picked it up today," said Brooks. "At one point I looked over and she was hitting winner after winner. It's been good to see Andra playing so well this spring. She's such a critical piece of our lineup and when she anchors the backside of team it just makes it that much easier for our squad to be successful."

ETSU returns to action as USC Upstate travels to the Tri-Cities for a 2 p.m. contest Friday at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
