Lady Bucs down FGCU 6-1 for sixth straight victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2010) - The ETSU women's tennis team extended its six match winning streak Wednesday as the Lady Bucs dropped Atlantic Sun Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast 6-1 at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

 

With the win ETSU improved to 7-2 with a perfect 3-0 mark in A-Sun play, while FGCU dropped to 4-6 overall with a 2-3 record in conference action.

 

"We played good enough to win today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "Florida Gulf Coast is an up and coming team in the conference so I'm proud of how the girls took care of business."

 

As doubles play got underway ETSU won all three matches. The Lady Bucs began their victories as senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and junior Kelly Hotzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) earned a 8-3 win at No. 1. ETSU followed that up as the sophomore team of Paula Jamie (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) picked up a 9-8 (7-4) come from behind victory at No. 2. Not to be outdone junior Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) and sophomore Diana Navroska (Kviv, Ukraine) closed out a close 9-7 win at No. 3.

 

"The doubles matches were very tough tonight," said Brooks. "I didn't know if we could comeback at two and three because we were down by four points at one time, but I give credit to the girls for having a lot of fight and determination. That was the difference that propelled us to get the early point."

 

As singles action started ETSU stayed in control as Stupak, Jaime, Kedzo, Navroska and junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) all picked up wins.

 

"Andra played really well for us today," said Zaatini. "Right now I think the girls are playing at a level that they know their capable of doing all the time. In the past this trip to Florida has been tough on us, but every player has worked hard getting ready for the heat and altitude this week. If we can keep our feet moving and play clean then we should be able to keep this up against a talented Stetson team."

 

ETSU returns to action as they square off in a rematch of the 2009 A-Sun Championship as the Lady Bucs take on Stetson with a 2 p.m match Saturday in DeLand, Fla.
