RICHMOND, Ky. (Jan. 23, 2010) - After somewhat of a disappointing start to the season a year ago the ETSU women's tennis team had little to be frustrated with in its 2010 season opener Saturday as the Lady Bucs rolled past Eastern Kentucky 7-0 inside the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center in Richmond, Ky.

With the win ETSU improves to 1-0, while Eastern Kentucky - the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion - fell to 0-2.

"I was pleased with the results today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I thought our doubles teams played well and it was good to get the season off in the right direction."

ETSU opened the contest with a tremendous effort in doubles. The Lady Buc duo of senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine), and Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa), cruised past Jessica Albuquerque and Anouk Faugre 8-2, while the sophomore team of Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), also picked up an 8-2 victory over Anais Hameel and Myriem Mhirit.

Rounding out the doubles scores was sophomore Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Urkaine), and junior Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.), who outlasted Branco and Alyze Pagal, 8-7.

As singles play began ETSU continued to rule as Stupak extend the Lady Buc advantage to 2-0 after her 6-1, 6-0 trounce over Albuquerque. Jaime then pushed the ETSU lead to 3-0 as the second-year Lady Buc breezed past Faure in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

ETSU closed out the win as Holtzhausen earned her first spring win as a Lady Buc with a strong 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mhirit, while teammate Karina Kedzo outlasted Pagal 6-4, 7-5 to push the lead to five nothing.

Minutes later junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania), - who saw limited action last spring with a wrist injury - opened her season with 6-7, 6-3, (14-12 tiebreaker), while Navroskska put the finishing touches on the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Esmira Gheisary.

ETSU will have a very short break as the Lady Bucs return to action for a 1:00 p.m., contest Sunday afternoon against No.11 Tennessee.
