GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 27, 2010) - Senior Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) qualified for the quarterfinals of the 100m after turning in one of the top 24 times Thursday evening in the First Round of the NCAA East Regional from the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
Despite not posting one the top three marks in his heat, Monal still advanced to Friday's quarterfinal. Monal, who ranked 11th in the 48-man field entering this meet, finished 20th overall with a time of 10.41.
"Coming into today's competition our goal was to advance to the quarterfinals, so Duronal did a solid job doing just that," said associate head coach Michelle Byrne. "With everything Duronal has endured over the last two weeks with his mother, it's just a testament of his will that he's here running this weekend. Now our goal tomorrow is to be in the top 12 and move on to Nationals."
Monal returns to the track to race in the 100m quarterfinals Friday evening at 6 p.m. The Belle Glade, Fla. native will also compete in the first round of the 200m at 7:30 p.m.
Junior Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) will be the first ETSU athlete to hit the grounding running Friday when his quest for an NCAA Championship bid in the 110m hurdles begins at 4:30 p.m.
