ETSU track and field wraps up competition in Myrtle Beach
Sunday, March 21, 2010
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 21, 2010) - The ETSU men's and women's track and field team wrapped up its first outdoor meet of the season this weekend, competing in the largest field on the east coast at the 2010 Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Coastal Carolina inside Doug Shaw Stadium.
The meet, which included 38 universities and 1,280 athletes, was a good way to see where the Bucs ranked early on in the season.
On Saturday, the ETSU jumpers stole the show, as freshman Ryan Beaver (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed third in the long jump and tied for eighth in the triple. Beaver posted a leap of 7.13m in the long jump and recorded a mark of 14.39m - tying him with UNC-Wilmington's Craig Williams for eighth.
Meanwhile, sophomore Cornell Sneed (Miami, Fla.) finished 10th in the discus on Saturday - recording a toss of 43.61m. Also, freshman Les Gilbert (Franklin, Tenn.) blasted his personal best in the javelin by letting one soar 52.09m.
On the track, junior Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) advanced to the finals in the 110mH, and finished fifth overall. The Palm Bay, Fla. native clocked in at 14.52.
On the women's side, Kelly Monteleone (Verona, Pa.) finished ninth in the triple jump after recording a leap of 11.66m.
"I am very pleased with the results from both Ryan and Kelly," commented assistant coach Eli Sunquist. "Both of them are jumping really well right now, and we look to build off these efforts as the season continues."
The Bucs' track and field team returns to action next weekend when ETSU competes at the Western Carolina Catamount Classic. The two-day meet kicks off on Friday, March 26.
