Henson announces 2010 schedule

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 15, 2010) - ETSU women's soccer head coach Heather Henson announced the 2010 schedule on Tuesday. Nine home contests and eight road matches make up a schedule that will start slow but will finish with a bang.

"We are very excited about this year's schedule," Henson said. "It offers some old rivals as well as new teams.  Some old rivals like Gardner Webb, a former Atlantic Sun member, as well as Radford and UNC Asheville. All of them are old rivals and have years of tradition and success."

The Bucs start off the 2010 season with exhibition contests against Charleston Southern (Aug. 12) and Radford (Aug. 15). ETSU will face UNC Asheville on Aug. 22 in the season opener as the Buccaneers head down I-26 to face the Bulldogs. The Bucs continue the season on the road at former A-Sun rival Gardner-Webb (Aug. 27) before facing Tennessee Wesleyan in the home opener on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m.

ETSU closes out the non-conference slate with home games against King College (Sept. 2), Temple (Sept. 10) and Winthrop (Sept. 12) as well as a road match against Francis Marion (Sept. 5). The King College match is slated to be the first ever true night game in the program's history.

"We are excited that we will be playing our home games under the lights," Henson added. "Due to the dedication of the ETSU administrators, Summers Taylor Stadium will have lights on the game field. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of the ETSU administrators and community supporters for their tireless efforts to complete this stadium project."

The Temple and Winthrop contests will be a part of  the 2010 ETSU Women's Soccer Invitational Tournament presented by DoubleTree Hotel. Temple and Winthrop will give the Bucs a tough test as they open the conference season the following weekend. A year ago, Winthrop fell just short of the 2009 Big South Tournament Championship as the Eagles upset the top seed in the tournament on the way to the finals, while the Owls have a good program and always compete in the Atlantic 10.

"It is very special for us to again host the ETSU Women's Soccer Invitational Tournament presented by DoubleTree Hotel," Henson said. "We have some great teams in Miami (Ohio), Temple, and Winthrop coming into compete that weekend."

Campbell comes to town on Sept.18 as the Buccaneers open the A-Sun slate with a three-game home stand. Lipscomb (Sept.24) and 2009 A-Sun Regular Season Co-Champion Belmont (Sept. 26) also will make their way to Johnson City, Tenn. during the home stand.

The Bucs then head to the River City to face North Florida (Oct. 1) and Jacksonville (Oct.3) before finishing the home season with Florida Gulf Coast (Oct. 8) and Stetson (Oct. 10). ETSU closes out the regular season with a three-game road stint as the Bucs head to Mercer (Oct. 15), 2009 A-Sun Regular Season Co-Champion Kennesaw State (Oct. 17) and USC Upstate (Oct.24).
