JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 30, 2010) - Head ETSU softball coach Andrea Mangrum and her staff announced Friday afternoon that Amanda Ake (Carrollton, Ga.) and Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) have signed their national letter of intent to play for the Lady Bucs in 2010-11.
"With the departure of our five seniors, we are continuing to fill the voids by signing these two players," said Mangrum, who has now signed six players for the 2010-11 season. "They both come from highly accredited travel ball programs and their strength of schedule in the summer will prepare them to have an immediate impact on our program."
Ake, a 5-6 middle infielder, is a four-year letterwinner in both softball and basketball at
"Amanda is a hard working, blue collar type player who has a true love for the game," added Mangrum. "She is a natural athlete who excels on the basketball court as well as the softball field. She is a middle infielder and strong offensive player. Her attitude and competitive drive will add depth to our program both on and off the field."
Joining Ake is (Jackie) Baird, who hails from the same high school as current sophomore third baseman Amy Campbell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) at Girls Preparatory School. Like Ake, Baird is a multi-sport athlete as she excels in both softball and basketball. Baird comes from a winning background as she helped guide the Bruisers to three straight state championship titles and has been named "Best of Preps" the last two seasons according to the Times Free Press. Baird's most productive season came in 2008 where she hit .475 with ten home runs and 53 RBI, and she is currently hitting an astounding .509 with 46 RBI this season.
"Jackie is a power hitting catcher and corner infielder," said Mangrum. "She too has competed against some of the best players in the country, while bringing a wealth of talent and knowledge to our team. She will assist in replacing the power and defense of Trisha Massenzo. She was a highly recruited player and I am honored that she chose to spend her career at ETSU."
Ake and Baird join a loaded 2010-11 recruiting class which also includes Alexa Cash (Vail,
