To start off last week we met with our new mental game coach Tami Matheny for the first time. We talked about things such as: affirmations, what it means to have team unity as well as having a positive environment/ positive energy for you and your teammates on and off the field. Her overall goal is to put all of those aspects together and to formulate a successful team. We will be meeting with her many times throughout the season to help us achieve this goal in addition to other pieces of the puzzle. It surely helped us prepare for our first game that was coming up later that week.

As our first game of the season rolled around the corner we were all so hyped and excited to play. As a freshman I was probably one of the most excited out of the group, and the most nervous. It was a new and exhilarating feeling but definitely a good one. It was our time to shine and to show our opponent what they were getting themselves into.

We had our usual walk through practice the day before and prepared ourselves for our first game against UNC Asheville. The next day, Sunday, was game day. We had brunch at school and set off for our game at around 11 a.m. It was our first game of the season with a clean sheet, and it was our time to set our own record. We were set to play the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at 2 p.m. The ride down to Asheville was only about an hour, so it was nothing compared to the five hours we made the week prior. It was just enough time to relax and get in the zone before we arrived. As the starting line up was called over the loud speaker and the national anthem was played we were finally ready for the whistle to blow to start the game. We came out with a bang and were up 2-0 at half time with two brilliant goals scored by Rachel Van Horn and Lindsay Bickel. In the second half, we then scored two more excellent goals which put us up 4-1 to finish off our first season game. We outshot the Bulldogs 23-11 (including the goals) and dominated the entire game!  Our coaches were very pleased with our performance, as were we. It seems that in each game we play we are able to improve more and more individually on the field, which allows us to develop further as a unit. Our game vs. UNC Asheville was a complete success and we hope to perform as well as we did and even better in our next upcoming games. We set off onto another adventure as we play Gardner Webb University on Friday, August 27th at 7pm.

Until next time,
Samantha Kron #4
