Volleyball sweeps N.C. Central and Maryland Eastern Shore on first day of tournament

DURHAM, N.C. (Sept. 24, 2010) -
The ETSU volleyball team opened the first day of play at the North Carolina Central Tournament in impressive fashion on Friday as they swept both N.C. Central and Maryland Eastern Shore at McDougald-McClendon Gym.
With the two victories, the Bucs are now 12-5 on the season which is their best start to a season since the 2006 season when the team had the same record through 17 matches. That team went on to finish the season with a 25-7 record and a perfect 9-0 mark in Atlantic Sun play.
The Bucs opened the tournament on Friday afternoon against the host N.C. Central. The Bucs controlled the match throughout as they swept the Eagles (25-15, 25-16, 25-13).
Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs offensively with eight kills in 17 attempts for a .412 hitting percentage. She also added three digs and four blocks. Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) came in with six kills (6-1-10) for a .500 hitting percentage, while also adding a game-high eight blocks. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished out 17 assists and added two kills, two aces, six digs, and three blocks. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the ETSU defense with 13 digs, while also recording two assists and a service ace.
The Bucs finished with a significant advantage in hitting. The Bucs hit for a season-high .333, while limiting the Eagles to a -.08 percentage on the evening. The -.08 attack percentage forced by the Bucs was the lowest attack percentage by an opponent since they limited Norfolk State to a -.110 percentage. ETSU also finished with a 13.0-2.0 advantage in blocks and the team recorded a season-high nine service aces.
Maritsann Sinclair led the Eagles with seven kills (7-3-23) for a .174 hitting percentage, while also leading the team with seven digs. With the loss, NCCU fell to 2-14 on the year.
ETSU 3, Maryland Eastern Shore 0
ETSU's second match of the day turned out very similar to the first as the Bucs were in complete control the entire match to earn their second straight 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) sweep. With the loss, UMES fell to 6-9 on the season.
The Bucs outhit the Hawks .296- -.07. ETSU also finished with a dominating 16.0-1.0 advantage in blocks. The Bucs have now reached double-digit blocks in eight matches on the year and have reached double figures in their last four matches.
ETSU hit .400 in the opening set while holding the Hawks to a .000 percentage. The Bucs kept UMES below the .000 mark in the final two sets.
Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) led the Bucs offensively with 10 kills (10-3-23), while hitting .304 and adding seven digs, an ace, and a block. Long, Devine, and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) each totaled five kills for the match. Long and Barber also had five blocks each. Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) finished the match with 10 total blocks, including three solo efforts. She also added three kills and two digs. Cogburn dished out a game-high 25 assists, while also adding a kill, four digs, and five blocks.
ETSU will continue the tournament tomorrow as they take on Hampton at 9 a.m. before closing the event against South Carolina State at 3:00 p.m.
