JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 24, 2010) - ETSU senior catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) recently was tabbed as the No. 9 catcher to watch in 2011, announced CollegeBaseball360.com on Monday.
"This is a great honor and a well deserved recognition for Derek," said head coach Tony Skole. "For three years Derek has been an everyday player for us, and it really is quite remarkable what he has accomplished. Quietly, he has put together an outstanding career."
Trent, a finalist for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award, hit .348 with 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 66 RBI. The local native also led the Atlantic Sun throwing out 23 base runners on the season.
"Derek has always been able to hit, but his improvement on defense is what has made him one of the best in the college game," Skole added. "He blocks and throws as well as anyone in the country. Derek is primed to have a big senior season for our club."
A 2010 First Team All-A-Sun selection, Trent instantly made an impact at ETSU in his freshman season as he set a new Buccaneer freshman home run record after hitting 15 in 2008. Trent also currently holds the single game record for RBI (8) and is fifth all-time on the career RBI list (148).
The Bucs open the 2011 season on Friday, February 18 at 3:05 p.m. as they play host to the Marist Red Foxes at Cardinal Park.
