Top-ranked Virginia men's tennis defeats No. 51 ETSU, 7-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
(Jan. 29, 2011) - One day after earning its first victory of 2011, the ETSU men's tennis team fell to the nation's top-ranked team Virginia, 7-0, Saturday evening in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match.
The Cavaliers improved to 6-0 on the season with the win, extending their school-record home win streak to 80 consecutive matches. The Bucs, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 on the young season.
The top-ranked Cavaliers got off to a quick start in doubles action as the No. 10 ranked doubles team of Jarmere Jenkins and Alex Domijan knocked off Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) and Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela), 8-5, at the No. 2 position.
The No. 3 ranked doubles team of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney clinched the doubles point for the Cavaliers with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot over the ETSU duo of Grega Teraz (Mojstrana,, Slovenia) and Charles Bottoni (Bois Guillaume, France). All was not lost in the doubles portion of the match for the Bucs as they got a win at the No. 3 position from Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay). The duo defeated Sanam Singh and Steven Rooda, 8-6. Akser and Ramirez finished the weekend with a perfect 2-0 mark in doubles action as they were victorious against Binghamton on Friday night as well.
Virginia remained in control to start singles play as the Cavaliers picked up a quick victory at the No.2 position when No. 3 ranked Domijan defeated No. 73 Bandres, 6-0, 6-2. Just a few minutes later, Singh, the No. 10 player in the nation, won in straight sets over Teraz, 6-4, 6-1.
The Cavaliers clinched the match at the No. 6 position as No. 77 ranked Julen Uriguen defeated ETSU freshman Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela), 6-1, 6-2. Courtney, the No. 17 ranked player in the nation defeated Ramirez, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot to put the Cavaliers up 5-0.
At the No. 4 position, ETSU's Bottoni got out to an early lead on No. 19 ranked Jenkins, but Jenkins rallied for the 7-5, 6-4 victory. To cap off the night, No. 27 Shabaz earned a hard fought, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, win over Gille at the No. 1 position.
After four matches in the spring dual season, all four of ETSU's opponents have been nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Bucs return to action on February 9 when they travel to Athens, Ga. to take on No. 11 ranked Georgia. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
