ETSU men's golf in 10th after first day of JU Invitational

(Jan. 31, 2011) - ETSU freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) put together back to back rounds of 75 to lead the Bucs on the opening day of the JU Invitational hosted by Mark McCumber. The Bucs are in 10th position after the first two rounds on the Players Course at TPC at Sawgrass.
ETSU opened its first 18-holes with a tough 312 (+24) which put them 13th position. The Bucs did, however, bounce back to fire a 302 (+14) during their second round of play. The Bucs sit in 10th in the 15-team field.
Lawson fired back to back rounds of 75 (75-75150) on the day and is ETSU's low finisher as he is tied for 24th. He recorded six total birdies during his 36-holes of play to go along with 12 bogeys and 18 pars. Lawson did not record a score worse than a bogey all day even though the course gave up 129 double bogey or worse scores.
Led by Bank Vonvanij's six-under par performance, top-ranked Florida owns a 17-shot lead after two rounds. Vonvanij carded a pair of three-under par 69s to take a three shot lead into final round over Wake Forest's Evan Beck, who shot 71 in the morning an 70 in the afternoon to finish at three-under par.

The Gators broke the team record with a two-under par 286 to lead by eight shots after the first round. The second round saw Florida break the record again, posting a five-under par 283, to expand its lead. Florida finished the day with four players in the top 10, with Andres Echavarria and Phillip Choi at tied for third at one-under par and Tyler McCumber tied for eighth at one-over par. Vonvanij is one of seven players at even-par or better entering the final round.

North Florida sits in second (+10) and No. 42 Liberty is in third (+14). Jacksonville State (+16) and No. 21 Wake Forest round out the top-five.

ETSU senior Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) is tied for 29th at 152 (+8). O'Kane recorded a solid second round 74 after opening the day with a 78.

Freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tennessee), who is playing in his first career tournament at ETSU, is tied for 60th at +15. Armstrong opened the day with a 77 before closing out his second round with an 82.

Devin Komline
(Dorset, Vermont) had the most up and down day for the Bucs as he recorded a team best even-par 72 during his second round, which followed an opening round 88. Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) is tied for 70th after two rounds.
