JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team surged for four runs in the seventh as the Bucs went on to win the resumed season opener against Marist 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Park. Junior Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) was impressive at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance that included three RBI and a couple extra base hits.
Junior transfer John Long (Anderson S.C.) looked good in his first outing for the Bucs (1-0)  limiting the Red Foxes (0-1) to two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work while striking out four.
Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) got the scoring going in the bottom of the third as the pair hit back-to-back doubles to plate a run. In the next at bat senior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) lined a ball through the left side of the infield to add a second run in the inning to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 advantage.
ETSU ran the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as left fielder Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) doubled in Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
The Red Foxes cut the Bucs lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning as Pat Welsh came in to score on a ball hit to short.
In the bottom half, Pratt grabbed a run back for the Bucs with his solo home run to right to give ETSU a 4-1 edge.
Marist would come back to tie the game at 4-all after a solo shot by Tim Nugent in the sixth and a costly two-run error by the Bucs in the seventh.
The Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the seventh rallying for four runs on a two-run double by Pratt and a Doane two-run single to go in front 8-4.
When the game was resumed, senior Ben Booker (Knoxville, Tenn.) came in and shut the door on the Red Foxes retiring six straight batters to close out the game.
Hoilman added a run for the Bucs in the bottom of the eighth as he crushed a solo home run over the left field fence to make the final 9-4.
Sophomore Scott McNally (Roswell, Ga.) picked up the win to improve to 1-0 on the season.
