Monday, February 28, 2011
MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2011) - Senior Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) and freshman Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) carded first round scores of 1-over-par 73 to lead the ETSU women's golf team to a strong opening day effort Sunday in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge at the Weston Hills Country Club.
Despite high winds and tough weather conditions, the Buccaneers posted a team score of 309, and will enter Monday's second round just six strokes back of tournament leader Miami. The Hurricanes finished the day at 303, while N.C. State and Florida International are tied for second at 305.
ETSU is currently ahead of programs such as Louisville, South Florida, Cincinnati, Kansas, Mississippi State and Kansas State.
Muehl and Evans are currently tied for seventh individually, but are just three strokes back of a quartet of players tied for first at 2-under-par 70. The players tied atop the leaderboard include Memphis' Marissa Steen, USF's Shena Yang, Arkansas State's Courtney Manning, and FIU's Shelby Cole.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 34th by freshman Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany), who posted a 7-over-par 79.
The Bucs will continue with second round play on Monday, followed by third round action on Wednesday. For more on ETSU women's golf, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women's golf link.
