Women's tennis falls at UNF, 4-3

Saturday, March 05, 2011

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Mar. 4, 2011) - The ETSU women's tennis team dropped the crucial doubles point before splitting the six singles matches and the Bucs fell to UNF, 4-3 Friday afternoon in the A-Sun opener for both teams.

"Today the doubles point was the difference," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "In order for us to improve we have a lot of work to do. We will possibly make some changes to give us the edge in the doubles area."

UNF (3-2, 1-0 A-Sun) got off to the quick start, claiming the doubles point early with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The Bucs did get a win from the No. 1 position as the duo of Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela)
knocked off Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre, 8-6.

In singles play, the Bucs (2-5, 0-1 A-Sun) earned victories at the No. 3, 4, and 6 positions. At No. 3, Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) won a hard fought match over Victoria Krook, 2-6, 6-3, (10-6).

Kedzo picked up a straight set victory at the No. 4 position as she defeated Aguirre, 6-0, 6-2. The third singles victory for the Bucs came at the No. 6 spot as Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) got past Melinda Doak, 7-5, 6-2. Voinea and Wieliczko are a team-best 5-2 during the spring dual season. Voinea owns the best overall mark on the squad as she is 15-7 on the season.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow to take on Jacksonville beginning at 10 a.m.
