Women's tennis concludes Florida swing with 4-2 victory over Florida Atlantic
Sunday, March 06, 2011
BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 6, 2011) - The ETSU women's tennis team concluded their three-match Florida swing with a 4-2 victory over Florida Atlantic, Sunday afternoon at the Patch Reef Tennis Center. The two teams only played singles due to projected rain in the area.
"I was very proud of the way the girls responded on the scoreboard from everything that was thrown at them today by Florida Atlantic," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "We must in the future learn from the day's experience to make us mentally stronger for the future."
The Bucs started quickly out of the gates, winning the first three matches of the day thanks to the bottom part of the lineup. Freshman Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) started the day with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Natasha Phillips, to earn her first victory in dual match play. Just a few minutes later, sophomore Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) rolled past Erika Mrazkova at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-2. It looked as if ETSU would have no problems when junior Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Cassie Bergeson, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 position to make it an early 3-0 for the Bucs.
However, Florida Atlantic battled back to win the next two matches at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions to trail by just one with only one match remaining.
The final match in progress was at the No. 1 position as ETSU senior Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) was battling Justine Humair. It did not look good early for Holtzhausen as she dropped the first set, but she battled back to win a tough second and force the deciding third set. Holtzhausen then rode the momentum she gained from the second set victory to win the third, to clinch the victory for the Bucs. Holtzhausen defeated Humair, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
"It was an awesome job by Kelly to clinch the win as she dug deep today and stayed focused the whole match," added Sandlant. "I hope she continues today's attitude for the rest of the year."
After eight straight matches on the road, the Bucs finally return home this Friday and Saturday for A-Sun matches against Belmont and Lipscomb. The Bucs face Belmont on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Lipscomb on Saturday at 1 p.m.
