Women's tennis rolls past USC Upstate, 6-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Mar. 19, 2011) - Following an impressive victory over Campbell to start the weekend, the ETSU women's tennis team closed out the weekend with a 6-1 victory over USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
 
"It is great to come away with a solid weekend on the courts," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "We have another test next weekend and I am hoping we can respond strong like we did this weekend."
 
The Bucs got off to a strong start in doubles play by taking all three matches to win the doubles point. The team of Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) earned a quick 8-2 victory over Karen Martinez and Talia Rojas at the No.1 position, 8-2. At the No. 2 position, Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) downed Maria Tonani and Ana-Sofia Camberos, 8-2. Finally, Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) shut out Catherine Estupinan and Samantha Knopsnyder, 8-0.
 
The Bucs kept rolling into singles play as they took five of the six singles matches on the afternoon. Holtzhausen defeated Tonani, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Wieliczko knocked off Martinez, 6-0, 6-4.
 
Kedzo continues to play well as she rolled past Rojas, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Voinea, playing in the No. 5 position today, quickly defeated Estupinan, 6-0, 6-2. Finally, Navrostska shut out Knopsnyder, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 position.
 
ETSU returns home next Friday and Saturday as they play host to Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. Friday's match against FGCU will begin at 2:30 p.m., while Saturday's contest against Stetson will start at 12:30 p.m.
