Bucs down Highlanders in first game of doubleheader, 7-4

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 22, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team defeated Radford 7-4 in game one of the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Park as junior Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) picked up his nation leading tenth save of the season.
 
Freshman Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) earned his first win of the season for the Bucs (13-4, 5-2 A-Sun) as he went 4.0 innings with six strikeouts and four runs. Cassidy McDaniel was tabbed with the loss for the Highlanders (12-7) after giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out three.
 
Senior catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 in the contest as he had his 200th career hit in the third inning.
 
The Highlanders grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a lead off home run by Matt Hillsinger and a RBI single by Alex Guerra.
 
Junior Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) tied the game at 2-all in the bottom half of the inning as he drove his seventh home run of the year over the fence in right center.
 
The Bucs grabbed their first lead of the day in the second inning as Reeder crushed a three-run homer over the scoreboard in left to give ETSU a 5-2 advantage.
 
After Trent led off the third inning with a single, centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) tripled to center scoring Trent to give the Bucs a 6-2 lead. In the next at bat, Scruggs came in to score on a sac fly to center by Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) to make the score 7-2.
 
Radford answered with two run in the fourth to cut the Buccaneer lead as Jake Taylor and Carl Travers hit back-to-back RBI doubles to bring the Highlanders within three runs.
 
Senior Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) came in and shut down the Highlander offense in the fifth and sixth innings throwing two scoreless innings of relief.
 
Reeder converted on his tenth straight save in the seventh as he threw his 12th straight scoreless inning to close out the game.
