Women's tennis picks up key A-Sun win over Stetson, 4-2

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 26, 2011) - After winning sweeping through doubles play, the ETSU women's tennis team picked up three singles victories to defeat Stetson, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
With the win ETSU improves to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in A-Sun play, while the Hatters dropped just their second match of the season. Stetson is now 15-2 overall and 6-2 in A-Sun play. The Bucs now are tied with just North Florida atop the A-Sun standings as both teams have just one loss.
"What an awesome effort today by the girls," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "Hats off to Stetson as they threw everything at us, but we responded each time they tried to claw their way back."
The match started with ETSU taking control of doubles play. The Bucs won each of the three matches to take the early 1-0 lead.
The ETSU duo of Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) picked up a quick 8-2 win over Shannon Gunning and Lindsey Cable at the No. 3 position. Since teaming together about halfway through the season, Navrostska/Voinea are now 7-1 on the season including a perfect 7-0 mark in league play.
Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Carolina de los Santos and Unnati Purushotham, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot. Jaime/Kedzo have now won seven straight doubles matches.
Finally, Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) and Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) downed Sierra Sullivan and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell, 8-5. Wieliczko/Holtzhausen have now won four straight and are undefeated in A-Sun play.
With the 1-0 advantage, Kedzo picked up a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory over Stauffer-MacDowell at the No. 4 position to put the Bucs up 2-0. Kedzo is a perfect 8-0 in A-Sun singles play.
After Stetson picked up a victory at the No. 2 position to cut the ETSU lead, Navrostska extended the lead back out as she knocked off Sullivan, 6-1, 6-3. The Hatters cut into the lead once again as de los Santos defeated Jaime at the No. 1 position.
The Bucs finally clinched the match as Wieliczko earned a tough 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gunning at the No. 3 position.
"It was a huge effort by Marine today to come back from a set down and clinch the win for us," added Sandlant. "That was a true testament of her fighting abilities."
The Bucs return to action on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 as they travel to Kennesaw State and Mercer for the final A-Sun regular season matches of the season. Friday's match against KSU will begin at 11 a.m., while Saturday's match at Mercer will get underway at 10 a.m.
