Women's tennis clinches at least a share of A-Sun title after defeating Kennesaw State, 5-2

Saturday, April 02, 2011

KENNESAW, Ga. (April 1, 2011) - After falling behind early following doubles play, the ETSU women's tennis team took five out of the six singles matches to defeat Kennesaw State, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Laurel Park Tennis Center. In addition, the Bucs clinched at least a share of the A-Sun regular season title. ETSU will clinch the out-right title tomorrow with a win against Mercer.
"Today we had a few chances to clinch the doubles point, but we just did not take our chances," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "We knew we made it a lot tougher than it needed to be, but we responded well and came out strong in singles. Today showed our true character and how much we wanted it, because we knew what was at stake. It was a great effort by the whole team and for Giulia to come out in the first conference match of her career and clinch the win four us shows how deep our team is."
With the victory, the Bucs move to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in A-Sun play. Meanwhile, Kennesaw State falls to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
The Bucs fell behind 1-0 early after dropping two out of the three doubles matches. ETSU got its only victory from Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) at the No. 1 position. The duo defeated Vera Shkundina and Ayano Tanaka, 8-5.
ETSU started strong in singles play as Jaime earned an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alexandra Apostu at the No. 2 position, to even the match up at 1-1. Just minutes later, ETSU took the lead as Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) won in straight sets over Mackenzie Swindall, 6-1, 6-1.
All of the momentum seemed to be on the ETSU side as Kedzo defeated reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Agatha Palider, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 4 position, putting the Bucs up 3-1.
The Bucs clinched the victory at the No. 6 spot as freshman Giulia Andreazza () picked up her first career A-Sun win as she defeated Tanaka, 6-2, 6-2.
ETSU picked up another victory a little while later as Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) earned a tough, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, victory over Morgan Carney at the No. 5 position.
"I was very pleased with the way they came back after dropping the doubles point," said ETSU Director of Tennis Yaser Zaatini. "Kennesaw State is an extremely solid team but our girls came out swinging and played extremely well. We had some good performances and overall the team effort was very solid. Hopefully today's solid play will help us for tomorrow."
ETSU returns to action tomorrow with a match against Mercer in the final A-Sun regular season match for the Bucs. With a win tomorrow, ETSU will clinch its second straight A-Sun regular season title.
