JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 7, 2011) - After clinching the A-Sun regular season title on this past weekend on the road against Mercer, the ETSU women's tennis team returns home to take on UNC Asheville in the regular season finale on Thursday afternoon at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center, beginning at 2 p.m.
The Bucs, winners of six straight matches, enter Thursday's match with a 12-6 overall record and a 9-1 mark in conference. ETSU will be the top-seed at next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament in DeLand, Fla.
ETSU seems to be peeking at just the right time - having won nine straight A-Sun matches to close out the conference season. Junior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain), a First-Team All-Atlantic Sun selection last year, is starting to hit her stride after starting out a bit slow. She was just recently named A-Sun player of the week after an undefeated week in both singles and doubles competition. Jaime and teammate Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) have been impressive in doubles play as they lead the team with 12 doubles wins, including owning a 9-1 conference mark.
Newcomer Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) has perhaps been the most consistent performer this season for the Bucs as she leads the team with 13 singles wins. Wieliczko heads into Thursday's match with six straight singles victories.
UNC Asheville enters the match with a 6-11 overall record. The Bulldogs most recently lost to Campbell on Tuesday. Stephanie Schon leads UNCA with a 10-7 dual singles record.
Thursday's regular season finale will also be the last home match for three ETSU seniors. Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.), Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania), and Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) will look to go out in style with a win in front of the home fans for the final time.
After facing UNCA on Thursday, ETSU will prepare for next week's A-Sun Tournament. The event starts on Thursday, April 14, but the Bucs will receive a first round bye and will not play until Friday for being the No. 1 seed.
