JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 7, 2011) - On a perfect day for tennis, the ETSU women's tennis team defeated UNC Asheville, 4-3, on Senior Day, Thursday afternoon at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Bucs close out the regular season with a 13-6 overall record, while UNC Asheville falls to 6-12 following the loss. Thursday marked the last home match of the season for the Bucs and it was the last regular season and home match for seniors Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa), Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania).
"The girls played pretty well and I think the doubles point turned out to be extremely important," said ETSU Director of Tennis Yaser Zaatini. "Obviously it hurts when you have two starters sitting out, but you have to give credit to UNC Asheville for fighting and giving us all we can handle. Paula and Andra stepped up, and our freshman Giulia was able to close out an important match."
ETSU got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point after taking two out of the three matches. The ETSU duo of Sheets and Voinea defeated Nicole Schon and Jackie McGuirk, 8-1. Just minutes later, the Bucs clinched the doubles point as Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) knocked off Stephanie Schon and Zoe Hamel, 8-3. Kedzo and Jaime have now won 10 straight doubles matches.
The Bucs kept the momentum going as freshman Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) picked up a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 position over McGuirk.
Then, the Bucs clinched the victory as Jaime and Voinea both picked up victories. Jaime defeated Devon Cavanaugh, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 position, while Voinea earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zoe Hamel at the No. 4 position. Jaime earned her third straight singles win, while Voinea finished the regular season with a four-match winning streak.

"We just need to show up all at once and be able to put it out there the whole time," said Zaatini. "We can't just pick spots in different times when we are going to try; it just doesn't work that way. I give credit to the girls for stepping up and getting a great victory with an injured squad, but it was good to see especially on senior day."
ETSU will be the No. 1 seed at next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament in DeLand, Fla. The Bucs will play the winner of the No. 4 versus No. 5 seed match on Friday in the semifinals.
