Men's golf finishes fifth at A-Sun Championship

(April 20, 2011) â€" ETSU sophomore Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) fired a season-low 4-under 67 to lead the Bucs to a fifth place finish on the final day of the Atlantic Sun Championship played on the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan.
Spraggs carded the lowest round of the day as he moved up 18 places on the leaderboard to finish tied for 10th at +1 (75-72-67â€"214), leading the Bucs.  Spraggs recorded five birdies and just one bogey as he bettered his previous best round of the season by two strokes.
The Bucs compiled a final round 2-under 282, which was their best round of the tournament. ETSU finished at 861 (+9) for the entire event.
Kennesaw State ended all three rounds of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship with the lead and on Wednesday afternoon were crowned champions for the first time in school history. The Owls posted a 54-hole score of (280-283-282--845, -7) to finish as the only team under-par besting second place UNF (854, +2) by nine-strokes. Campbell concluded just one-stroke behind UNF carding a (855, +3).
Mercer finished in fourth place (860, +8) just ahead of 2010 A-Sun Champions ETSU (861, +9). There was a two-way tie for sixth between FGCU and USC Upstate, with Jacksonville, Stetson and Lipscomb rounding out the field.
The Owls’ Karlsson fired a three-day total of six-under, 207, to earn the individual medalist honor, while Nagy's three-under, 210, tied him for second place. Beyond Karlsson, the individual race ended with a tight finish as a quartet of individuals tied for second including Karlssons' teammate Matt Nagy, Matt Moot of Campbell, Kevin Phelan of UNF and Hans Reimers of Mercer. Karlsson’s win gives the junior his third individual title of the season.

ETSU senior Paul O’Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) followed up his 2-under 69 on Tuesday with an even-par 71 in Wednesday’s final round. O’Kane was 2-over through 13-holes, but closed out his round with back to back birdies on holes 14 and 15. O’Kane finished the tournament tied for 22nd at +4 (77-69-71â€"217).
Junior Devin Komline (Dorset, Vt.) and freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) fired matching rounds of 72 on Wednesday as both finished tied for 17th at 216 (+3). Freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) finished tied for 40th at 223 (+10) following a final round 74.
The Chateau Course, which features contoured fairways, thick Bermuda roughs, and strategically placed lakes and ponds, opened in July 1989. Built on 170 acres of the finest terrain, the 7,030 yard layout of the Chateau Elan Course, designed by Denis Griffiths, plays to a par 71. Winding along three lakes and two creeks, water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes while 87 bunkers line the layout.
