JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 20, 2011) - Members of the ETSU women's basketball team spent time giving back to the community on Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Bucs read books and talked about the importance of education to first and third graders at Hampton Elementary School.

Freshmen Ashley Miles (Bowie, Md.) and Shawn Randall (Orlando, Fla.) as well as members of the Lady Buccaneer coaching staff were on hand for the special activity. Following the book reading and speaking arrangements, Miles and Randall autographed ETSU items and passed out Lady Buccaneer gear to the students.

"From the first day when our team arrives on campus, I always stress the importance of community service and helping those in need," said head coach Karen Kemp. "Today was a great way for our players and coaches to talk about the significance of reading and staying in school, because the youth in our area look to the Lady Bucs as role models. Not only is doing service work around the Johnson City/Washington County area important, but reaching out to the Carter County schools - like we did - is essential because we feel it's vital to help those across our region."

The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
