JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 22, 2011) â€" Members of the ETSU men’s basketball team took time out on Thursday to visit with school children from Mountain View Elementary School during their annual Boys Sports Banquet for children ages Pre-K through 5th grade.
The Buccaneers promoted the importance of education, determination, being active, and listening to teachers, parents and coaches during the event. In addition, the squad split up to play a special intra-squad game highlighted by spectacular dunks and a running half-court shot.
Members of the team that were in attendance included Director of Basketball Operations Andrew Greene, seniors Micah Williams (Manchester), Mike Smith (Vandalia, Mo.), DeShaud Johnson (Bristol), Justin Tubbs (Trussville, Ala.) and Tommy Hubbard (Boston), junior Adam Sollazzo (Tampa), sophomores J.C. Ward (Marietta, Ga.), Lukas Poderis (Tampa), Sheldon Cooley (Tampa) and Jarvis Jones (Memphis), and freshman Ryan Woumn (Lynn, Mass.).
“We’re always happy to come out and talk about the importance of things like education, and listen to people like parents and teachers,” Hubbard said. “Having the opportunity to spend time with young people and help influence their lives is one of the highlights of being a Division I college athlete at ETSU.”
Members of the ETSU marketing department were also on hand to give away over 150 t-shirts to the participants. Meanwhile, the Bucs played games like “keep away” from the children while dribbling the basketball.
“It was like trying to keep bread away from a flock of birds,” Williams said.
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
