Long guides Bucs to 5-2 win over Jaspers in game one

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 30, 2011) - Senior John Long (Anderson, S.C.) looked good on the mound as the ETSU baseball team defeated Manhattan College 5-2 Saturday afternoon in game one of the doubleheader at Cardinal Park.
 
Long went 7.2 innings for the Bucs (25-15, 12-10 A-Sun) limiting the Jaspers to two runs scattering eight hits to improve to 4-5 on the year.
 
ETSU was outhit 8-5 in the contest by Manhattan (23-13, 14-0 MAAC). Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the way offensively for ETSU going 1-for-2 with a home run, walk and two RBI.
 
The Jaspers got on the board first as Mike McCann singled in Nick Camastro from second in the top of the first inning.
 
In the top of the second, with runnners on first and second Mark Onorati singled to left plating Ramon Ortega, but Anthony Vega would be cut down at the plate to end the inning.
 
ETSU evened the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer to right by Pratt.
 
Centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Scruggs later advanced to third after a stolen base and a throwing error by Ortega. Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) put the Buccaneers in front 3-2 later in the inning as he singled in Scruggs from third.
 
The Bucs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh after Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) reached on catcher's interference and Green and Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) walked. Niesman would come in to score on a balk by Dan Fienberg to make the score 4-2.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, ETSU added an insurance run as Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) came in to score on a safety squeeze by Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) to take a 5-2 edge.
 
Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) then came in to close out the game in the ninth for the Bucs facing the minimum en route to his 14th save of the year.
