Burton shuts down Mercer offense in 4-1 win to close out the regular season
Bo Burton Saturday, May 21, 2011 MACON, Ga. (May 21, 2011) - Senior starter Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) limited a potent Mercer offense to one run as the ETSU baseball team defeated the Bears 4-1 in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga.
Burton took a shutout into the ninth inning for the Bucs (36-19, 16-12 A-Sun) scattering nine hits before Mercer (36-18, 17-12 A-Sun) finally broke into the scoring column on a RBI double by catcher Jason Butts. The right hander struck out six on the afternoon while allowing no free passes to improve to 4-4 on the year.
Junior Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) picked 18th save in the game to lead the nation as he came in with one out in the ninth and retired two of the three batters he faced to close out the contest.
Chris Newell was tabbed with the loss for the Bears after giving up two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Mercer out hit ETSU 11-6 in the contest as Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the contest with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and scored two runs.
The Bucs grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first for the third straight day as Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) came in to score from third on a sac fly to left by Hoilman. Green led of the contest with a single to increase his hit streak to 17 games.
ETSU added a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to left by Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) scoring Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) to make the score 2-0. Pratt's double in the inning gave him a 12-game hit streak.
In the bottom half of the frame, Scruggs made an outstanding defensive play as he cut down Butts at the plate on a single to centerfield to end the inning and keep the Bears off of the scoreboard.
With a 2-0 count in the sixth, Hoilman gave the Buccaneers a 3-0 lead as he crushed his 22nd home run of the year over the scoreboard in left center.
Hoilman then added an insurance run for the Bucs in the ninth as he doubled down the left field line and then came around to score on two wild pitches by J.T Odom to make the score 4-0.
