JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 10, 2011) – ETSU Director of Tennis Yaser Zaatini has announced the signing of Choo Lyn Yee (Kuching, Malaysia) for the spring 2012 season.

“I think (Yee) is going to come in and have an immediate impact on our program,” said ETSU tennis assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “She’s played at the highest level of tennis in her country, and that type of maturity and experience makes her an invaluable asset to the program.”

Hailing from the capital city of Kuching, in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak, Yee will add even more talent to the defending Atlantic Sun Tournament champions.

Most recently, Yee won the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) 42nd Brunei ITF Junior Circuit 2010 last November. She was also a reserve player for the Fed Cup 2010 Malaysian team that finished fourth in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II. Yee currently holds an ITF junior ranking of 769.

Yee touted numerous athletic accomplishments in 2009, becoming the Malaysian champion of the Asia/Oceania pre-qualifier for the Junior Fed Cup. She would also win five other tournaments including both the singles and doubles Milo National Junior Tennis Championships and the U16 Sport-Excel-Milo-MSN-MSSM singles title.

In 2008, Yee took home nine different championships – four doubles, three singles and two team. She won both the U14 singles and doubles titles at the Sport-Excel-Milo-MSN-MSSM Junior National Circuit Second Leg and the MSS Sarawak Tennis 2008. Yee then won the U16 singles and doubles titles in the 2008 MBPJ/Milo Junior Tennis Open Championship while also helping to win two separate team championships in the Malaysia Game XII and Sarawak Team GU 16.

The addition of Yee will increase the diversity of an already global ETSU women’s tennis roster, as Yee will join Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil), Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain), Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) as the sixth foreigner on the squad.

“It’s a great addition to have tapped into Southeast Asia and find such a talented athlete,” said Sandlant. “There is so much talent over there and we feel lucky to have signed one of the best in the area.”
