ETSU women’s golf adds three signees for 2011-12

Thursday, August 11, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 10, 2011) – ETSU women’s golf head coach Stefanie Shelton announced Wednesday that the Buccaneers have added three new players to the team’s roster for the 2011-12 season.

True freshmen Kelsey Coey (Bangor, Northern Ireland) and Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), along with junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) – a transfer from Texas A&M – will join the Bucs when the fall semester begins later this month.

Coey, who is instructed by the same coach as professional tour star Rory McIlroy, finished fourth in the 2010 Ireland Girls Order of the Merit and comes from a family rich in golf history. She was selected to both the 2009 and 2010 Ulster U18 Girls Team and was also selected to the Irish Girls Panel.

"Kelsey comes from a family of excellent golfers,” Shelton said. “With their support and great coaching from Michael Bannon (Rory McIlroy's coach), she has quickly progressed. She will have all the tools necessary to become a strong contributor for us.”

Meanwhile, Wahl most recently received an invitation to compete as an amateur in a Ladies European Tour professional event last May, making the cut and posting the top finish for an amateur with a 64th-place showing in the Unicredit Ladies German Open. She also won the 2010 Bavarian Ladies Amateur Championship, and finished fifth at the German Ladies Amateur Championship. Her career low round is a 5-under-par 67 and her scoring average in 2010 was 72.8.

"Gabriella is an extremely smart, focused, and competitive young woman,” Shelton said. “She has experience at a highly competitive level, so we are very excited to have Gabriella represent ETSU."

A transfer from Texas A&M, Garner finished sixth in the 2008 South African Amateur Championship, was the 2008 Gauteng North Junior Champion, and was the runner-up at the 2007 South African Rose Bowl.

"Chloe brings a wealth of experience having played on a championship team at Texas A&M, where she posted two Top 10 finishes during her time there,” Shelton said. “She is a highly spirited competitor and will help us reach new levels of success."

Shelton’s team will open play for the 2011-12 season on Monday, Sept. 19, playing in the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup, hosted by the University of Louisville.
