Wednesday, August 17, 2011
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 17, 2011) – ETSU sophomore Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship for the second straight year. This year’s U.S. Amateur will take place Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.
Lawson earned a spot after firing a two-day total of 139 (67-72) in the sectional qualifier at Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro, N.C.
This marks the second straight year that Lawson has qualified for the championship. Last year, Lawson fired a two-day total of 142 at the Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C. to qualify for the event at Chambers Bay in Washington.
During last year’s championship, Lawson compiled a two-day total of 159 and missed the cut for match play by 10 shots. Only the top 64 players from a field of over 300 qualify for match play.
Lawson finished the 2010-11 season ranked second in scoring average on the ETSU squad with a 74.3 mark. In addition, he closed the season with three straight top-20 finishes en route to being named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.
Opened in 2006, Erin Hills already boasts a strong relationship with the USGA, having hosted the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship that saw Tiffany Joh defeat Jennifer Song for her second WAPL title. Last June, the USGA announced the course will be the host site for the 2017 U.S. Open Championship, marking the first time that championship will be conducted in the state of Wisconsin.
At 7,760 yards, the 2011 U.S. Amateur will be the longest course in USGA history, surpassing last year’s 7,742 yards at Chambers Bay.
In sharp contrast to the youth and unique layout of Erin Hills, Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, which will serve as the companion course for stroke play, is a traditional, parkland-style golf course. Designed by legendary architect Seth Raynor and opened in 1926, Blue Mound’s 6,622 yards will force the Amateur competitors to prove their championship mettle through a variety of shot-making challenges.
