MTSU defeats ETSU volleyball 3-0

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (September 2, 2011) – Ashley Adams and Maria Szivos recorded 10 kills apiece to lead MTSU volleyball past ETSU, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15), on the opening day of the Blue Raider Bash, Friday night at Alumni Gym.

MTSU improves to 2-2 on the season after the win, while ETSU falls to 3-2.

Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the ETSU offense with a game-high 14 kills on 39 attempts, while also adding four digs. Freshman Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a strong performance as she recorded eight kills on just 12 attempts, while also chipping in two blocks. Freshman setter Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished out 19 assists and compiled six digs.

MTSU outhit ETSU .364 to .056 on the night, while also using a 37-29 advantage in kills. The Blue Raiders only recorded nine attack errors on the night in 77 attempts.

In the opening set, MTSU got off to a quick start by jumping out to a 14-7 lead. The Bucs responded; however, by winning the next five points to pull within two. After a Devine kill that cut the lead to one at 15-14, MTSU extended the lead back out and took the set, 25-20.

ETSU jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but with the score tied at 4-4, Szivos recorded a kill to put MTSU in front for good in the frame. The Szivos kill started a 5-0 MTSU run that the Blue Raiders would build upon. MTSU took the set 25-17.

Middle Tennessee State led the third set wire to wire, with a decisive .276 to .033 hitting advantage to take the 25-15 win in the set, which closed out the match.

ETSU continues play at the Blue Raider Bash tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Missouri. The Bucs will also take on Austin Peay tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
